Luckily for us, some fascinating wellness trends are making a name for themselves in 2020. They’re making wellness more accessible and enjoyable. Companies and entrepreneurs everywhere are going green, promoting sustainability, and influencing consumers in the process.
In 2018, the global wellness economy was worth an astonishing $4.5 trillion. It saw a 6.4 percent growth in just two years. This market includes things like personal care and beauty, healthy eating, workplace wellness, fitness, and more.
This is all fantastic news for us—it’s a prime time to get involved in this lifestyle.

1. Workout Technology (Still)
We’re talking about wearable tech, which is getting better by the release, and tech-based gym equipment that makes working out at home so much more fun.
One thing that’s getting fantastic feedback right now is Mirror—the “nearly invisible home gym.”
Mirror is just that: an under-two-feet mirror that’s seamless, allowing for easy integration into your home as a stand or wall mount. The Mirror, however, offers instruction, classes, and feedback, gym-style as if from a fancy TV screen. Workouts include yoga, the barre method, kettlebell exercises, and more, covering a range of 20 genres.
As far as wearable tech goes, it’s getting smarter.
Fitbit and Apple Watch, to name two, are tracking our heart rate, sleep cycles, and daily movement in a way that’s optimized and personalized. But wearable tech goes beyond even that, with options including wristwear, head and eyewear, neckwear, smart clothing, wearable cameras, and more.
By 2022, the market is expected to grow by $50 billion.
2. Recovery-Based Fitness
What good is your intense, action-packed fitness class without some rest? Spoiler alert: it’s not good.
Skipping rest day makes you more prone to injury, stress, and other adverse effects. 2020 is the year to focus on recovery-based fitness, and luckily, there are many ways to do so.
Some things you can try on your non-HIIT day are
- Gentle yoga or movement, like Tai chi (low-impact martial arts)
- Simple stretching exercises
- Swimming or a leisurely bike ride
- Light resistance training
- A steady-state walk
- Self-myofascial release—like using a foam roller, peanut, or lacrosse ball—to massage connective tissues
- Hip/core activation exercises
These recovery-based practices give your body time to recover, repair, and gain strength while still being active enough to keep you satisfied.
3. Functional and Integrative Medicine
People are demanding more personalized, involved healthcare regimes, and rightfully so. Thanks to the newfound focus on integrative and/or functional medicine, unengaged doctors are a trend we can say goodbye to.
Functional medicine is an effective method for diagnosing patients. It considers the body as a whole, gathering insight from diet, behaviors, sleep, environment, lifestyle habits. Its job is to get to the root of any problems—not to slap a bandaid on them without figuring out the exact causes.
This ‘whole body health’ approach allows each organism to be observed, providing a more thorough diagnosis.
Integrative medicine is similar in its whole-body, holistic approach. It emphasizes the patient/practitioner relationship, allowing for a more therapeutic interaction. It involves healing-orientated medicine meant to put the patient at the center.
With these methods in practice, healthcare is more personalized, helpful, and practical.
4. A Focus on Skincare and Sustainable Makeup
In the last decade, skincare sales have gone up an astounding 48 percent.
People are now taking greater care about what goes on their face. It’s less about covering up what’s there and more about prioritizing the skin underneath. One skincare line alone, Drunk Elephant, garnered almost $35 million in sales since the start of 2019—over 100 percent more than the year before!
What ingredients are in your skincare products? How “green” is your favorite makeup line? How sustainable are the brands you purchase?
These questions are all playing a significant role in the beauty industry’s profits. For example, 38 percent of people prefer buying from sustainable brands (a number that’s sure to rise), and 73 percent say they want to reduce their impact on the environment.
These companies need to keep this in mind in 2020, considering things like packaging, ingredients, manufacturing, and more.
5. Less Alcohol (Plus, Questioning the Drinking Culture)

It turns out you’re far from alone.
Take the book Sober Curious by Ruby Warrington, whose tagline reads “The Blissful Sleep, Greater Focus, Limitless Presence, and Deep Connection Awaiting Us All on the Other Side of Alcohol.” This well-received book highlights some of our more significant issues with alcohol, starting with its acceptance and ending with de-stigmatizing its abstinence.
Warrington prompts us to take a look at the drinking culture that surrounds us all and to question it, too. Why is drinking expected of us? Why does abstaining from alcohol automatically warrant a “do you have a problem?” look?
Warrington states in her book that reducing alcohol consumption “is the next logical step in the wellness revolution,” and we agree.
