What is Behavioral Modification and what does it mean for weight loss?
Behavioral modification is a therapeutic approach designed to change a particular undesirable negative behavior. According to Foundations Recovery Network, “The belief behind behavior modification is that all behaviors can be observed and measured and used as targets for change. As a result of those consequences (positive or negative), a person can learn, shape or eliminate certain behaviors.” What this means for weight loss is an open door. An open door to a different type of weight loss journey, one that is effective and low risk.
Research has shown.
Recently a study conducted by the US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) shows that the risks of participating in these studies were minimal. This is a major plus to behavioral interventions. The USPSTF task force analyzed 89 behavioral weight loss program trials from all over the world, and these included participants of both genders as well as many racial and ethnic groups, with ages between 22 and 66, and body mass index between 25 and 39. With a wide variety of specialists involved, including, behavioral therapists, psychologists, registered dietitians, exercise physiologists, lifestyle coaches, as well as physicians, the patient under study was provided counseling on basics like nutrition, physical activity, and self-monitoring, as well as psychological components like identifying obstacles, planning ahead, problem-solving, and relapse prevention. Peer encouragement was also part of the study with 24/7 access to support groups and counselors. According to the Harvard Health Publishing Harvard Medical School, “Participants had significant weight loss compared to controls, averaging between 1 and 20 pounds, with an average weight loss of 5 pounds overall, and were more likely to have lost 5% of their total body weight at 12 to 18 months. Thirteen trials looked at diabetes risk, and pooled results showed that participants had a significantly lower risk of developing diabetes.”
